Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor (born 6 May 2019) is the son ofPrince Harry, Duke of Sussex, andMeghan, Duchess of Sussex. He is seventh in theline of succession to the British throne.

Early life and family

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born to theDuke andDuchess of Sussex at 05:26BST (04:26UTC) on 6 May 2019 at thePortland Hospital in London.[1][2] Several landmarks were illuminated in different colours to mark the birth, includingNiagara Falls, theCN Tower and theLondon Eye.[3][4][5] His name was announced on 8 May 2019.[6] He waschristened wearing theroyal christening gown byJustin Welby,Archbishop of Canterbury, on 6 July 2019 in the private chapel atWindsor Castle, with water from theRiver Jordan.[7]

Mountbatten-Windsor descends paternally from theBritish royal family. He has mixed-race ancestry maternally, havingAfrican-American and European-American lineage.[8] In the 2021 television interviewOprah with Meghan and Harry, the Duchess of Sussex said that a member of the royal family was concerned "about how dark [Mountbatten-Windsor's] skin might be when he's born".[9] In early 2020, Mountbatten-Windsor's parents stepped down from their roles as working members of the royal family.[10] The family then moved to North America, and have resided inMontecito, California, since that summer.[11] Mountbatten-Windsor has dual nationality of the United Kingdom and the United States.[12][13]

Title and succession

As a great-grandchild ofQueen Elizabeth II,[14] Mountbatten-Windsor is seventh in theline of succession to the British throne. Asheir apparent to his father'sDukedom of Sussex,Earldom of Dumbarton, andBarony of Kilkeel, he is customarily entitled to use Prince Harry's seniorsubsidiary title Earl of Dumbarton as acourtesy.[14][15] However, the Duke and Duchess decided instead that he would be styled asMaster Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in accordance with their wish that he grow up as a private citizen.[16][17][18][19]

Underletters patent issued byKing George V in 1917, Mountbatten-Windsor is entitled to become a prince upon the accession of his grandfather,Charles, Prince of Wales. In the interviewOprah with Meghan and Harry, the Duchess of Sussex said that she had been told that changes would be made to remove that entitlement as part of Charles's reported plans for a slimmed-down monarchy.[20] She suggested that this was because her son is mixed-race.[9]
