Southeast Asian Canadians areCanadians who were either born in or can trace theirancestry toSoutheast Asia. The term Southeast Asian Canadian is a subgroup ofAsian Canadians. According toStatistics Canada, Southeast Asian Canadians are consideredvisible minorities and can be further divided by ethnicity and/or nationality, such asCambodian Canadian,Filipino Canadian,Indonesian Canadian,Laotian Canadian,Malaysian Canadian,Singaporean Canadian,Thai Canadian, orVietnamese Canadian, as seen on demi-decadalcensus data.[1]
Southeast Asian Canadians are typically identified under the term "Asian"; popular usage of this term in Canada generally excludes bothWest andSouth Asians, instead solely referring to individuals ofEast Asian or Southeast Asian ancestry.
In 2021, just over 25 million people reported being White in the census, representing close to 70% of the total Canadian population. The vast majority reported being White only, while 2.4% also reported one or more other racialized groups.
