Nanzhili, formerlyromanized asNan-chih-li and also known asSouth orSouthern Zhili orChih-li, was ahistoricalprovince of theMing dynasty. Its capital wasNanjing, from which it is also sometimes known asNanjing orNanking Province. Nanzhili combined areas of theYuanprovinces ofHenan Jiangbei andJiangzhe and took its name—Chinese for "Southern Directly Administered Area"—from Nanjing's status as the Ming'snational capital under theHongwu Emperor and as the secondary capital after theYongle Emperor's move toBeijing, which oversawBeizhili or the Northern Directly Administered Area. During the earlyQing dynasty,[when?] Nanzhili was renamedJiangnan and then divided into the separateprovinces ofJiangsu andAnhui. Under theRepublic andPeople's Republic of China, an area of Jiangsu also became theprovincial-level municipality ofShanghai.
