South Huish is a village andcivil parish about 4 miles south west ofKingsbridge,[2] in theSouth Hams district, in the county ofDevon, England. The parish includesGalmpton andHope Cove.[3] According to the 2021 census the parish had a population of 459.[4] The parish touchesWest Alvington,South Milton andMalborough.[5] The parish is in theSouth Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.[6]
St Andrew's Church is a ruined Grade II* listed building.[7] There is a school in Malborough called Malborough With South Huish Church Of England Primary School.[8] South Huish Reserve is located in a shallow valley cut off from the sea by the dunes behind South Milton Sands and is in the ownership of the National Trust which took ownership in 2011. Devon Birds has managed it since 1994.[9] There are 27listed buildings in South Huish.[10]
The name "Huish" means household.[11] South Huish was recorded in theDomesday Book asHewis/Heuis[12] and had a population of 12,[13] both South Huish and Galmpton had Ralph as a holder.[14] Alternative names for South Huish are "Huish South" and "Huish".[15] The parish was historically in theStanborough hundred.[16] The site of a submarine forest was uncovered in 1923.[17]
