View of South Brooklyn

South Brooklyn is a historic term[1][2] for a section of the formerCity of Brooklyn – now theNew York Cityborough ofBrooklyn – encompassing what are now theBoerum Hill,Carroll Gardens,Cobble Hill,Gowanus,Park Slope,Windsor Terrace,Sunset Park andRed Hook neighborhoods.[1][3][4] It was named for its location along the waterfront[5] that was the southern border of the originalVillage of Brooklyn, and has remained widely used[6] as a colloquialism despite it no longer being the southernmost point of the borough.[7] It should not be confused with the geographic southern region of the modern borough of Brooklyn, which includes the neighborhoods ofGravesend,Seagate,Coney Island,Brighton Beach,Manhattan Beach,Sheepshead Bay,Gerritsen Beach,Marine Park,Mill Basin, andBergen Beach.

"South Brooklyn" or "Southern Brooklyn" is also in use in the modern borough of Brooklyn, but without total consistency as to what it refers to. It has been used about neighborhoods as various and physically separated as Mill Basin,Bensonhurst,[8]Carroll Gardens,[9]Gowanus,[10]Red Hook,[11] Smith Street,[12]Sunset Park,[13]Windsor Terrace,[14] as well asBay Ridge,Dyker Heights, andPark Slope.[15][a]

Transportation

[edit]

TheNew York City Subway'sIND Culver Line (F and G trains) serves the area at theCarroll Street andSmith–Ninth Streets stations.[17] The line was originally named the "South Brooklyn Line" on some officialsubway maps.[18] However, this obsolete name for the Culver Line may have referred to theSouth Brooklyn Railway, the original right of way of theBMT Culver Line; this right-of-way originally ran betweenSunset Park, in the southern part of the former city of Brooklyn, andConey Island, the southernmost area in the modern borough of Brooklyn.[19]

TheB57 andB61 bus routes serve South Brooklyn as well.[20]
