María Soraya Rodríguez Ramos (pronounced[soˈɾaʝaroˈðɾiɣeθ]; born 1 December 1963) is aSpanishlawyer and politician who has been serving as aMember of the European Parliament forCiudadanos since 2019. She previously was a Deputy of thePSOE in theCongress of Deputies.[1]
Born inValladolid, Rodríguez graduated with her law degree from theUniversity of Valladolid, with a specialization inCommunity Law, in 1987.[2][1] Between 1988 and 1990 she worked as a lawyer at the Center for the Reception of Women Victims of Ill-treatment inValladolid.[3] She was Secretary of Social Movements and Citizen Participation in the Regional Executive of thePSOE inCastile and Leon. Later, in 1991 she was professor of the University School of Labor Relations of Valladolid.[3] Between 1994 and 1997 she was director of the Center for Women in the city of Valladolid.[3] In 1998, she served as legal advisor to the Local Administration.[3]
In 1994, as a member of thePSOE, Rodríguez was named the Secretary of Organization in the Provincial Executive of the Party in Valladolid.[1] She was later a member of the Federal Committee of the PSOE between 2000 and 2008. In the general elections of 2004 Rodríguez won a seat in theParliament representing Valladolid.[1] In the municipal elections of 2007, she ran as thePSOE candidate to themayoralty ofValladolid, but was defeated by the candidate of thePopular Party.[1]
Between 2007 and 2008 Rodríguez was the spokeswoman of the socialist municipal group in the City Council of Valladolid.[1] In the general elections of 2008 she was re-elected as a national deputy in Valladolid and was second consecutive legislature, being number two in the list, after Jesus Quijano. In July 2008, on the proposal of PresidentJosé Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, she left her seat and position as president of the municipal group of thePSOE inValladolid to becomeSecretary of State for International Cooperation, replacingLeire Pajin.[4] In the municipality of Valladolid, she was replaced by Óscar Puente.[5]
In the2011 national elections Rodríguez topped the list ofPSOE by theProvince of Valladolid, accompanied by the provincial secretary Mario Bedera, obtaining 2 seats against the 3 of thePP. After the 38th Congress of thePSOE in whichAlfredo Perez Rubalcaba was elected general secretary, she was appointed spokesman for the socialist group in theCongress of Deputies, a position she held until September 2014.[6]
Since the2019 European elections, Rodríguez has been serving as a member of theRenew Europe forCiudadanos on the European Parliament’sCommittee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and theCommittee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. She is also a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development,[7] theEuropean Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights[8] and theMEPs Against Cancer group.[9]
Rodríguez is divorced and has two children.[10]
