Sorana is a village (frazione) in the municipality ofPescia in theprovince of Pistoia inTuscany, Italy.[1]It lies along thePescia River [it] on the slope ofMonte Petritulo in the foothills of theApennine Mountains[1] about twelve kilometers fromMontecatini Terme.[2] In 1994, it had 300 inhabitants.[2]: viii The area is known for its production of theSorana bean.[1]
Sorana is one of theTen Castella in the local area known as theValleriana and nicknamedSvizzera Pesciatina [it].[3] The other castelle areAramo,Castelvecchio,Fibbialla,Medicina,Pietrabuona,Pontito,San Quirico,Stiappa, andVellano, plus an eleventh,Lignana, which is in ruins.[3] The castella villages are built frompietra serena stone.[3]
