History

[edit]

In the 10th century, the area became part of the emerging Polish state under its first historic rulerMieszko I. In 1242, DukeCasimir I of Kuyavia from thePiast dynasty stayed in Sompolno, and issued aprivilege for theSulejów Abbey there.[2] Sompolno was grantedtown rights in 1477.[3] It was aroyal town, administratively located in theBrześć Kujawski Voivodeship in theGreater Poland Province of the Kingdom of Poland. A route connectingWarsaw withPoznań andDresden ran through the town in the 18th century and KingAugustus III of Poland often traveled that route.[4]

During theGerman occupation of Poland (World War II), Sompolno was renamed toDeutscheck between 1939 and 1943 and then later toDeutscheneck between 1943 and 1945[5] in an attempt to erase traces of Polish origin.
