Sofie Svava (born 11 August 2000) is a Danish professionalfootballer who plays as aleft wing-back ormidfielder forPremière Ligue clubLyon and theDenmark national team.

Svava has previously played forFC Rosengård of the SwedishDamallsvenskan,Brøndby IF of the DanishElitedivisionen,VfL Wolfsburg of the GermanBundesliga, andReal Madrid of the SpanishLiga F.[3] In January 2020, she was named byUEFA as one of the 10 most promising young players in Europe.[4]

Club career

Svava played in the junior teams of the clubs Hørsholm-Usserød IK, Brøndby IF, B.93 Copenhagen, and Ballerup-Skovlunde Fodbold.

Starting at age 16, Svava played forBrøndby IF in the Danish top league and won the cup in her first season. In her second season she won the Danish championship. In July 2019, it was announced that Svava had signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Swedish sideFC Rosengård. It was reported that Brøndby had received a club-record fee for 17-year-old Svava.[5] In her debut season, she wonDamallsvenskan. This made her champion twice in one year.

In November 2020, it was announced that Svava had signed a three-year contract with German clubVfL Wolfsburg, running from January 2021.[3] She made her debut on 5 February 2021 in the game againstTurbine Potsdam when she came on as a substitute in injury time. In the2021/22 Champions League, she was used in the group games againstServette FC Chênois andJuventus and reached the quarter-finals with the team.

In January 2022, Svava moved toReal Madrid.[6]

In June 2024, Svava left Real Madrid and joined French clubLyon.[7]

International career

Svava made her first appearances for the Denmark U16 team in three games during a UEFA tournament in Ireland in February 2015. She then took part in the Nordic Cup at the end of June and beginning of July 2015. In September 2015 she was used in theU17 team in two friendly matches againstItaly and scored her first international goal on 8 September. In October she took part in the firstqualifying round for the2016 U17 European Championship. They reached the elite round where she scored a goal againstIsrael.

In September 2016 she made her first appearance in theU19 team, winning 3–2 againstSwitzerland in a friendly match. In October she played in the firstqualifying round for the2017 U19 European Championship. She scored againstSlovakia and qualified for the elite round as second in the group.[8] She then played in three games at a tournament inLa Manga in March 2017. She played again in September in the firstqualifying round for the2018 U19 European Championship. At the tournament, she contributed two goals and was named to the Best XI of the tournament.[9] She was part of the team again at the finals of the2018 U19 European Championship. They reached the semi-finals but lost 0–1 against defending championsSpain, who won first place three days later.[10] The firstqualifying round for the2019 U19 European Championship started just one month later, and Svava scored againstLiechtenstein.[11] In October she took part with the team in the tournament.

Senior

Svava debuted for theDanish national team in the 1–0 friendly victory againstFinland in January 2019, coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute.[12] In 2019, Svava was named Danish Breakthrough Player of the Year.[13] Additionally, she was nominated for Danish Football Player of the Year.

She has appeared for the team during theUEFA Euro 2021 qualifying cycle.[14] She scored the first senior national goal in the victory againstGeorgia inqualifying for theEuro 2022.[15] She played in the three games at the2020 Algarve Cup and four other European Championship qualifying games, therefore able to contribute to early qualification for the finals.

She was always used in the nine games played inqualification for the 2023 World Cup and scored one goal. After Russia were excluded because of the political attack on Ukraine, which violated international law, Denmark were confirmed as World Cup participants early. They last took part in a World Cup in 2007.[16] On 16 June 2022, she was nominated for theEuro 2022.[17] There she was used in two games as Denmark were eliminated in the group stage. On 30 June she was nominated for theWorld Cup in Australia and New Zealand.[18] She was not used at the World Cup, where Denmark made it to the round of 16 before being eliminated byAustralia.
