TheSocial Liberal Union (Romanian:Uniunea Social Liberală,USL) was agrand coalition of severalpolitical parties which was active inRomania during the early to mid 2010s. The alliance contained two major political parties, one majorcentre-left and onecentre-right, more specifically theSocial Democratic Party (PSD) and theNational Liberal Party (PNL), respectively.

The USL was formed on 5 February 2011^[4] initially between theSocial Democratic Party (PSD), and theCentre Right Alliance (ACD) ofNational Liberal Party (PNL) and theConservative Party (PC).

In June 2012, the USL won thelocal elections by a landslide. After the elections, in September, theNational Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), originally a breakaway from PSD and PNL, together with the PSD formed theCentre Left Alliance (ACS)^[5] and entered the USL.

At theparliamentary elections in December, the four-party coalition won about two thirds of the seats in both theSenate and theChamber of Deputies.^[6]

After theCentre Right Alliance (ACD) of PNL and PC dissolved in November 2013, the PC turnedleftwards and aligned more with PSD and UNPR. As a result, thecentre-right National Liberal Party (PNL) broke up the coalition on 25 February 2014 and entered opposition.^[7]

In the2014 presidential election, PSD, UNPR, and PC would designateVictor Ponta as their united candidate, while the PNL formed a newChristian Liberal Alliance (ACL) with theDemocratic Liberal Party (PDL), supportingKlaus Iohannis.
