TheSocial Democratic Party (French:Parti social-démocrate,pronounced[paʁtisɔsjaldemɔkʁat], PSD) was acentristpolitical party in France.
Originally namedDemocratic Socialist Movement of France (Mouvement démocrate socialiste de France, MDSF), the party was founded in 1973, by a split from theSocialist Party (PS). Its founders (among themMax Lejeune,André Santini,Pierre-Cristophe Baguet,Charles Baur,Émile Muller,Joseph Klifa andAuguste Locoeur) opposed to the alliance with theFrench Communist Party (PCF) arranged byFrançois Mitterrand on behalf of the PS based on theCommon Programme.
In 1978, the PSD joined theUnion for French Democracy (UDF), thecentre-right confederation created in order to support PresidentValéry Giscard d'Estaing.[1] In 1995, the PSD merged with theCentre of Social Democrats (CDS), theChristian-democratic component of the confederation, to formDemocratic Force (FD), which later became the core of a unified UDF in 1998.[2]
