TheSobral fault is a major fault in the Borborema geological province of northeasternBrazil, a part of theTransbrasiliano lineament. It is commonly correlated with theKandi fault inBenin, east of theWest African craton.[1]The fault lies in the northwest ofCeará state. It appears to have formed late in theorogeny when theWest African craton engaged with theCongo craton, and to have allowed significantdextral strike-slip movement. It was reactivated whenSouth America was breaking away fromAfrica.[2]In this later phase, asinistral shear movement of about 100 km seems to have taken place during and after the break-up.[3]
