Slalok Mountain, originally known asRex's Pillar, is a 2,653-metre (8,704-foot) mountain summit located in theCoast Mountains, inJoffre Lakes Provincial Park, in southwesternBritish Columbia,Canada. It is the third-highest point of the Joffre Group, which is a subset of theLillooet Ranges.[3] It is situated 24 km (15 mi) east ofPemberton, and 8 km (5 mi) northeast ofLillooet Lake. It is 4 km (2 mi) northeast ofDuffey Peak and the nearest higher peak isMount Matier, 1.9 km (1 mi) to the east.[3] Precipitationrunoff from the peak drains into Joffre Creek and Twin One Creek, both tributaries of theLillooet River. Thefirst ascent of the mountain was made in 1963 by C. Adam, T. Anderson, and G. Richardson.[1] The mountain's nameSlalok is the traditional name for the settlement of nearbyMount Currie.[4] The name was officially adopted on June 11, 1979, by theGeographical Names Board of Canada.[2] The mountain and its climate supports the Matier Glacier, Stonecrop Glacier, and Tszil Glacier on the northern slopes.

Climate

[edit]

Based on theKöppen climate classification, Slalok Mountain is located in asubarctic climate zone of westernNorth America.[5] Mostweather fronts originate in thePacific Ocean, and travel east toward theCoast Mountains where they are forced upward by the range (Orographic lift), causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain or snowfall. As a result, the Coast Mountains experience high precipitation, especially during the winter months in the form of snowfall. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C with wind chill factors below −30 °C. The months July through September offer the most favorable weather for climbing Slalok Mountain.
