Inoptics, asimple lens orsinglet lens is alens consisting of a single simple element. Typical examples include amagnifying glass or a lens in a pair of simplereading glasses.[1]
Simple lenses are prone toaberrations, especiallychromatic aberration. They cannot be used for precise imaging and make poorcamera lenses. They are commonly used forlaser applications, however, where the beams are bothmonochromatic (minimizing chromatic aberration) and narrow (minimizingspherical aberration).
Somecameras withfixed lenses have been made using a simple lens, usually ameniscus lens with the convex face facing outward. In such examples the lensaperture is made small and in some cases (such as theKodakBrownie 127 camera), thefilm plane is curved to reduce the impact of aberrations.
