Johann(es) Simon Mayr (also spelled Majer, Mayer, Maier), also known in Italian asGiovanni Simone Mayr orSimone Mayr (14 June 1763 – 2 December 1845), was a Germancomposer. His music reflects thetransition from theClassical to theRomantic musical era. In 1805 he founded theBergamo Conservatory. He was an early inspiration toRossini andMeyerbeer and taught and advocated forDonizetti.

Life

[edit]

He was born inMendorf nearAltmannstein,Landkreis Eichstätt,Bavaria, and studiedtheology at theUniversity of Ingolstadt, continuing his studies in Italy from 1787. He was closely associated with theIlluminati ofAdam Weishaupt while a student in Ingolstadt, and the ideals of theFrench Enlightenment were a strong influence on his philosophy as a musician as corroborated by his famedZibaldone or "Notebooks" compiled toward the end of his career.

Shortly thereafter, he took music lessons withCarlo Lenzi, and later withFerdinando Bertoni. He moved toBergamo in 1802 and was appointedmaestro di cappella at theCathedral of Bergamo, succeeding his old teacher Lenzi. He held the post until his death, and became a central figure in the city's musical life, organizing concerts and introducingLudwig van Beethoven's music there. In 1805 he founded theBergamo Conservatory; then known as the Lezioni Caritatevoli di Musica.[1] One of his pupils at the conservatory wasGaetano Donizetti. By the end of his life, he wasblind. He died inBergamo and is buried in theBasilica di Santa Maria Maggiore there, just in front of the tomb of his famous pupil.

Mayr's works, among which there are almost seventyoperas, are rarely performed today.
