Simha Gharjane (transl. Roar of the lion) is a 1983 IndianKannada-language film, directed byS. A. Chandrasekhar and produced by A. R. Raju. The film starsVishnuvardhan,Vijayashanti,Kalyan Kumar andSharada.[1] This film was the remake of the Telugu movieMama Allula Saval (1980). The film was remade by the director himself in Tamil asPuthu Yugam (1985).
Jayasimha, a dedicated and upright lawyer, finds himself falling in love with Lalitha, the daughter of a morally compromised police officer. When the corrupt policeman attempts to persuade Jaysimha to abandon a critical case, Jaysimha stands firm in his pursuit of justice, inadvertently inviting a series of challenges and obstacles into his life. As the story unfolds, the film explores themes of integrity, love, and the struggle against corruption.
Following the release ofGedda Maga andHasida Hebbuli in 1983, directorS. A. Chandrasekhar ventured to make another Kannada film. He wrote the screenplay for the story penned by his wife. Veteran producer A.R.Raju decided to produce the movie.[3]Vishnuvardhan was roped in to play the lead role. Interestingly two notable movies in the career of the lead actor,Sahodarara Saval andVijay Vikram, were produced by A.R.Raju.[4]Vijayashanti who had made her Kannada debut withKeralida Hennu, plays the female lead. Veteran actorsKalyan Kumar andSharada were chosen to portray pivotal supporting characters.Jai Jagadish was given an important supporting role whileMukhyamantri Chandru who had become an overnight star through his villainous role inChakravyuha released in the same year was selected to play another key role.Satyam who worked with the director inHasida Hebbuli was retained as the music director. The film was given the titleSimha Gharjane. In fact, it was the time when Vishnuvardhan became popular among the masses by the titleSahasa Simha.
As the usual Chandrasekhar moviesSimha Gharjane was an action drama with a strong social theme. The movie dealt with corruption and battle of justice.
According to Vishnuvardhan's fans, the movie was uniquely influenced bySahasa Simha in terms of its action based storyline.Onde Guri,Sididedda Sahodara andOorige Upakari were other such movies. The movie has attained a minor cult following among Vishnu's fans who regard it as one of the best 'mass' movie in his career.[citation needed]
