Siguiri (N’ko: ߛߌ߯ߙߌ߲߫; Arabic: سِجِرِ ِ) is a city in northeasternGuinea on theRiver Niger. It is asub-prefecture and capital ofSiguiri Prefecture in theKankan Region.[4]
It is known for itsgoldsmiths and as the birthplace ofSekouba Bambino Diabaté. Siguiri is the site of a formerFrenchfort built in 1888, and theSiguiri Airport.
'Sigui' means 'buffalo' and 'ri' means place, a name given to the area due to its dense brush and abundant population of wild animals.[2]
Siguiri has been an important center since the time ofSundiata Keita.[5] Some oral traditions have Sundiata's oldest son, Nyamagan, settling and ruling there.[6] The town moved several times, on both sides of the river, due to flooding and the search for richer agricultural land on the banks of the Niger.[2]
Placer gold is mined here.[7] North and northwest of Siguiri, and along theTinkisso River, is theBouré region. This region replacedBambouk as a majorgold producer in the 11th-12th centuries.
Siguiri has atropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classificationAw).
