Thesigmoid sinuses (sigma- or s-shaped hollow curve), also known as thepars sigmoid, are paireddural venous sinuses within theskull that receive blood from posteriortransverse sinuses.
The sigmoid sinus is adural venous sinus situated within thedura mater. The sigmoid sinus receives blood from thetransverse sinuses, which track the posterior wall of the cranial cavity, travels inferiorly along theparietal bone, temporal bone andoccipital bone, and converges with theinferior petrosal sinuses to form theinternal jugular vein.[1]: 795–6
Each sigmoid sinus begins beneath thetemporal bone and follows a tortuous course to thejugular foramen, at which point the sinus becomes continuous with theinternal jugular vein.
The sigmoid sinus receives blood from the transverse sinuses, which receive blood from the posterior aspect of the skull. Along its course, the sigmoid sinus also receives blood from thecerebral veins, cerebellar veins, diploic veins, andemissary veins.[1]: 795
