Sicalis is agenus of birds in the tanager familyThraupidae. Sometimes classified in the bunting and American sparrow familyEmberizidae, more recent studies have shown it to belong in the Thraupidae.

Taxonomy and species list

The genusSicalis was introduced in 1828 by the German zoologistFriedrich Boie.[1] The name is from theAncient Greek σικαλίς/sikalis, a small, black-headed bird, mentioned byEpicharmus,Aristotle, and other authors. It was perhaps a warbler in the genusSylvia.[2] Thetype species is thesaffron finch.[3] The genus now contains 13 species.[4]
