Sibaté (Spanish pronunciation:[siβaˈte]) is a municipality and town ofColombia in theSoacha Province, part of thedepartment ofCundinamarca. Sibaté is located on theBogotá savanna with the urban centre at an altitude of 2,700 metres (8,900 ft) and a distance of 27 kilometres (17 mi) from the capitalBogotá. It forms part of themetropolitan area of the capital. Sibaté bordersSoacha in the north,Pasca andFusagasugá in the south, Soacha in the east andSilvania andGranada in the west.[2]
Sibaté means inChibcha "Leak of the lake", according toscholarMiguel Triana.[2]
In the times before theSpanish conquest, the area of Sibaté was inhabited by theMuisca. The Bogotá savanna was ruled by thezipa based inBacatá.
Modern Sibaté was founded on November 24, 1967.[2]
Main economical activities of Sibaté areagriculture (potatoes,peas andstrawberries) andlivestock farming.[2]
