Shonar Beri (Bengali:সোনার বেড়ি; also known in English asChains of Gold) is a 1987Bengali documentary film.[1][2] Written and directed byTareque Masud, the film was his directorial debut.[3] The film was also the firstvideo documentary[4] and was an early attempt at dealing with gender issues in Bangladesh.[5] It deals with the oppressed condition ofwomen in Bangladesh,[6] portraying everyday subordination of women under theIslamic regulation in Bangladeshi society.[7]
