TheShire of Bungil was alocal government area in theMaranoa region ofQueensland,Australia.^[2] It existed from 1880 to 2008.

The shire surrounded the town ofRoma, which had its own local government. Roma was also the location of the administration of Bungil Shire. Today it is part of theMaranoa Region.

Wallumbilla Division (later renamedBooringa Division) was established on 11 November 1879 as one of the original divisions proclaimed under theDivisional Boards Act 1879 with a population of 3217.^[3]

On 21 May 1880, part of Wallumbilla Division was separated to createBungil Division.^[4]

On 31 March 1903, Bungil Division became Shire of Bungil under the "Local Authorities Act 1902".^[2]

In July 2007, the Local Government Reform Commission released a report recommending a number of amalgamations of local government areas in Queensland. As a result, under theLocal Government (Reform Implementation) Act 2007, on 15 March 2008, the new local government area ofRoma Region was created, as an amalgamation of five previous local government areas:^[5]

• theTown of Roma;
• theShire of Bendemere;
• theShire of Booringa;
• the Shire of Bungil;
• and theShire of Warroo.

On 26 July 2009, Roma Region was renamedMaranoa Region.^[5]

The Bungil Shire Council's offices at 1 Cartwright Street, Roma (26°35′02″S148°46′36″E / 26.58383°S 148.77675°E /-26.58383; 148.77675 (Bungil Shire Council)) are now used as a depot by theMaranoa Regional Council.
