Shih Ming-shuai (Chinese:施名帥; born 23 August 1982) is a Taiwanese actor and television host. He appeared in the filmsThe Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful (2017),The Scoundrels (2018), andNina Wu (2019), before landing leading roles in the filmClassmates Minus and theFTV seriesAnimal Whisper (both 2020), for which he received a nomination forBest Male Lead in the56th Golden Bell Awards. He also co-hosted the variety programThree Piglets from 2021 to 2022 and wonBest Host in a Reality Show in the57th Golden Bell Awards. In 2024, he wonBest Supporting Actor in the61st Golden Horse Awards for his performance inGATAO: Like Father Like Son.
Shih was born on 23 August 1982 in Taiwan.[1] He grew up in a single-parent family, primarily raised by his grandparents,[2] while his mother worked as a nurse atKeelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.[3] He described his family's financial situation as poor and began working part-time as early as elementary school.[4] Shih attendedHwa Kang Arts School [zh] for high school, where he later reflected on his years as lacking motivation, repeating his freshman year three times and even being suspended for a semester due to fighting.[5][6] After watchingLegacy, a dance performance choreographed byLin Hwai-min, Shih developed an interest in performing and worked hard to gain admission toTaipei National University of the Arts.[6] He initially studied at the School of Dance in his freshman year but transferred to the School of Theater Arts in his second year.[6] He explained that he transferred because of a knee injury sustained from frequent dance practices, and he chose to pursue acting instead to ensure a longer performing career.[7] He was a classmate of fellow actorHuang Di-yang.[8] He spent a total of six years at TNUA before graduating with aBachelor of Fine Arts.[6][9] During his university years, Shih began filming advertisements, including one alongsideGwei Lun-mei,[6] and also performed as a stage actor forShakespeare's Wild Sisters Group [zh] and Move Theater.[10]
In 2011, Shih began his on-screen career after completing hismandatory military service at the age of 29.[5][11] In his early acting career, he could not afford rent, so he worked as an editing assistant at a friend's production studio, where he also slept.[11] He made his debut in the drama filmCoconut, which earned him nominations for Best Actor and Best New Talent in the13th Taipei Film Festival.[5] Following these nominations, Shih began receiving offers for television roles,[11] including a recurring part as Axe in the 2012Hakka TV seriesJump! Cheerleader [zh].[12] In 2014, he appeared in a supporting role as the brother ofAustin Lin's character in the drama filmAnywhere Somewhere Nowhere [zh],[13] followed by leading roles in the Hakka TV seriesBrave Forward [zh] and the television filmThe Free Man,[14][15] for which he received a nomination forBest Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film in the49th Golden Bell Awards.[16] In 2015, Shih starred in the drama filmThe Laundryman [zh],[17] and took on recurring roles inAn Adopted Daughter [zh] andA Touch of Green.[18][19] He also made cameo appearances as a film director in the dramaAnother Woman,[20] and as a special agent from the 1980s alongsideMo Tzu-yi in the period dramaThe Best of Youth [zh].[21] Shih continued to appear in supporting roles, portraying a gangster in the 2016 dramaFighting Meiling [zh] and an assassin named Duan Yi in the 2017 crime filmThe Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful.[22][23] He also appeared in the family dramaWe are All Family [zh] andWake Up 2 that same year.[24][25]
In 2018, Shih played Wu Tzu-jie, one half of agood-cop-bad-cop duo alongsideJack Kao in the crime filmThe Scoundrels [zh], for which Elizabeth Kerr ofThe Hollywood Reporter praised their performances, stating they "elevated The Scoundrels into respectability".[26] He also had a leading role in the Chinese period dramaThe Bittersweet Taiwan [zh], alongside seven other Taiwanese actors in the ensemble.[27] In 2019, Shih portrayed The Director, the filmmaker in the film-within-a-filmSpy Romance, in the dramaNina Wu directed byMidi Z,[28] with C.J. Sheu ofThe News Lens describing his performance as creating "an atmosphere of fear on set".[29] He appeared as the right-hand man of a police chief played byJoan Chen the crime filmSheep Without a Shepherd,[30] and as a psychiatrist in the drama seriesThe World Between Us.[31]
In 2020, Shih landed his first male lead role as Tom, a struggling film director, in the drama filmClassmates Minus,[32] and made a guest appearance in the romance filmA Leg, which Estella Huang ofMirror Media described as "enriching" the film.[33] He also starred in another leading role in the pet-themedFTV seriesAnimal Whisper [zh],[34] which earned him a nomination forBest Male Lead in a Television Series in the 56th Golden Bell Awards.[35] In 2021, Shih joined the variety programThree Piglets [zh] in the second season, and returned to host the third season alongsideYang Kuei-mei,Austin Lin, andWen Chen-ling in 2022,[36][37] for which they wonBest Host in a Reality or Game Show in the57th Golden Bell Awards.[38] Shih also took on main roles in the drama seriesNo Regrets In Life [zh] and the anthology seriesOn Marriage [zh] that same year.[39][40]
In 2023, Shih secured leading roles in the drama filmDay Off [zh] and the crime seriesTaiwan Crime Stories.[41][42] He also made a cameo appearance as a frozen corpse in the horror-comedy seriesWhat The Hell Is Love [zh],[43] which was well-received among audience.[44][45] In 2024, Shih starred as a table tennis coach in the sports filmDoubles Match [zh].[46] Lee Kuang-chueh, writing forYahoo! Lifestyle, called Shih's interactions with his character's daughter (played by Yeh Yi-jun) "very interesting" and praised his character arc.[47] He then appeared as a captive during thePacific War in the period dramaThree Tears in Borneo,[48] followed by a lead role as Mang, a high-ranking gangster, in the filmGATAO: Like Father Like Son [zh],[49] for which he wonBest Supporting Actor in the61st Golden Horse Awards.[50]
Shih married fellow actressZhu Zhi-ying [zh] on 20 May 2023 after a seven-year relationship,[51] and they publicly announced their marriage in August 2024.[52][53] They were classmates at Taipei National University of the Arts and have known each other for 17 years, but they only began their relationship in 2017.[54][55]
