This is a list ofsheriffs ofMiddlesex .
History of the office [ edit ] From c. 1131 to 1889 there was no separate sheriff for the county. By a charter ofHenry I thelivery of theCity of London were given the right to elect twosheriffs of "London and Middlesex" on a payment of £300per annum tothe Crown .[ 1] This continued until 1889, when theLocal Government Act 1888 came into force. A single High Sheriff of Middlesex was thereafter appointed in the same manner as other English counties. At the same time, the most populous parts of Middlesex were included in the newCounty of London , which had its ownhigh sheriff .[ 2]
The office ceased to exist in 1965, when Middlesex was abolished. The majority of the area became part of the jurisdiction of theHigh Sheriff of Greater London .[ 3]
