Sheléa Melody Frazier also known asSheléa (/ʃʔˈlə/shuh-lay-yuh) is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Her 2014 track "I'll Never Let You Go" peaked at 23 onBillboard's Adult R&B chart. She is mentored byStevie Wonder, and is a protégée ofQuincy Jones. Sheléa portrays gospel singerDorinda Clark Cole in the 2020Lifetime biopicThe Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.[1][2][3][4]

Sheléa Frazier was born inRedwood City, California, and raised inBakersfield, California.[5][6][7] She has been singing and playing piano since she was a child.[8] She has citedNatalie Cole's albumUnforgettable... with Love as the impetus for her desire to become a singer.[8]

Sheléa co-wrote and performed thetheme song to theUPN television sitcomAll of Us from 2003 to 2006.

Sheléa began her professional career working with producersJimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.[9] In 2008, she sang lead on the track "Someone to Watch Over Me", at the request ofTake 6; the song was nominated for aGrammy.[10] Afterward,Stevie Wonder contacted the singer for collaborations.[10]

Sheléa first gained wider prominence in 2012 after she posted aYouTube video singing a medley ofWhitney Houston covers after the singer's death, which went viral.[11][5] Later that year, she was invited to theWhite House to sing for theObamas at theGershwin Prize presentation.[10] The next year, Sheléa performed a Whitney Houston tribute at theGrammy Museum.[5]

Shelea's debut album,Love Fell On Me, was released in 2013. The track "I'll Never Let You Go" song peaked at 23 on Billboard's Adult R&B chart.[2] She also wrote and performed the 2011 track "Love Fell On Me" for the filmJumping the Broom.

In 2019, she released an albumPretty World. A Tribute to Allen & Marilyn Bergman, which included Stevie Wonder andKirk Whalum.[12] Later that year,Quincy Jones produced a concert special onPBS featuring the singer, calledQuincy Jones Presents: Sheléa. Shelea's performance featuredDavid Foster.[10]

She starred in the 2020Clark Sisters biopicThe Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel asDorinda Clark-Cole.[12]

Mentorship and influences

Sheléa is mentored by Stevie Wonder and is a protégée of Quincy Jones. She was a backup singer for Wonder'sSongs in the Key of Life Tour in 2014 and 2015.[13] In 2018, she held a two-month residency at Jones' Q's Bar & Lounge inDubai.[13]

She has stated that Whitney Houston is one of her biggest inspirations.[5]
