Sharmila Sahiba Faruqui Hasham (Urdu: شرمیلا صاحبہ فاروقی ہشام; born 25 January 1978) is aPakistani politician fromKarachi, affiliated with the Pakistan Peoples Party.
Faruqui is the daughter of Usman Farooqi, who was a bureaucrat and a former chairman ofPakistan Steel Mill[citation needed] and Anisa. She belongs to aSindhi family. Her maternal grandfather wasN M Uqaili, formerPakistan Minister of Finance and Faruqui is the niece of Salman Faruqui, a confidante of formerPresidentAsif Ali Zardari.[1]
Faruqui earned herMaster of Business Administration from theAdamson Institute of Business Administration and Technology,Karachi and aMaster of Laws degree.[1]
Faruqui married Hasham Riaz Sheikh, a formerWall Street investment banker and presently an advisor to Asif Ali Zardari,[2] on 5 March 2015.[3]
Prior to joining politics as aPakistan Peoples Party leader, Faruqui worked as an actress. She appeared in aDrama serial "Panchwa Mausam" along withAijaz Aslam,Talat Hussain,Abdullah Kadwani and Gulab Chandio.[4][5]
She appears onTV politicalnews/talk/public affairsNews channels to defend her party and government from corruption allegations.[6]
She previously served as a member ofProvincial Assembly of Sindh from 2013–2018[7] and was reelected in2018 Pakistani general elections and later became its member in February 2020.[8][9]
In 2001, Faruqui along with her father Usman Faruqui,embezzled Rs 195 billion ($1.95 billion) from Pakistan Steel Mills andGovernment of Pakistan throughpolitical corruption andfraud. Anisa Faruqui, her mother, entered into aplea bargain with theNational Accountability Bureau on 28 April 2001 after being arrested withFirst Information Report (FIR) No. 19/96, and given into the custody of the Ehtesab Cell by the Special Judge, Central II, handling cases of topcorrupt public servants like Usman Faruqui. Sharmila Faruqui and her family were extensively investigated by officers of theNational Accountability Bureau,Federal Investigation Agency and officialsKarachi Electric Supply Corporation due to the non-payment of electricity bills to the tune of Rs 1 million.[1][10]
