Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (Chinese: 上海对外经贸大学; abbreviated asSUIBE), formerly known as Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (abbreviated as SIFT), was originally founded in 1960. It is affiliated with the City of Shanghai and funded by theShanghai Municipal People's Government.[1] It is the only university in East China specializing in international business, dedicated to cultivating talent in international economics and trade.
The university was originally under the direct administration of theMinistry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of China. In 1994, it came under the leadership of theShanghai Municipal People's Government. It was one of the world's first and China's first universities to host aWTO Chair.
As of March 2024, SUIBE covers an area of approximately 670,000 square meters. It comprises 20 secondary-level units (colleges/institutes), offers 35 undergraduate programs, and features facilities such as student dormitories, the Library and Information Building, and the Xuesi Building.
The university has over 14,000 students and more than 1,500 faculty and staff members, including nearly 900 full-time faculty. It also hosts 1 postdoctoral research station, 1 first-level doctoral discipline, 6 second-level doctoral disciplines, 7 first-level master's disciplines, 41 second-level master's disciplines, 13 categories of professional master's degrees, 2 key disciplines of Shanghai, 2 high-level disciplines under Shanghai's "Peak and Plateau" program, and 5 key disciplines designated by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (formerly Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade) was founded in 1960. The original campus was located at 620 Gubei Road,Changning District, Shanghai.
In 1994, the university was transferred to the administration of theShanghai Municipal Government.
In 2000, the municipal government allocated land inSongjiang District to build a new campus, which was put into use the following year.
In 2009, the university was selected as one of the world's firstWTO Chairs institutions and remains the only one in China.
In 2013, the Ministry of Education approved its renaming to Shanghai University of International Business and Economics.
In 2019, it was recognized as theWTO Asia-Pacific Training Center, becoming the only regional training partner established in mainland China among the seven globalWTO training partners.
In 2021, it was authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer doctoral degrees, with Applied Economics approved as a first-level discipline doctoral program.
In 2022, it was listed among Shanghai's key high-level local universities. In 2023, it was approved to establish apostdoctoral research station inApplied Economics.
The university has three campuses inShanghai, located inSongjiang,Changning andMinhang.
