Olaseni Abdul-Jelili "Shane" Lawal (born October 8, 1986) is a retired Nigerian-American professionalbasketball player. He played thecenter position.

College career

Lawal playedcollege basketball for three years atOakland University, with theOakland Golden Grizzlies, before moving toWayne State University, where he played with theWayne State Warriors during the 2008–09 season.[1]

Professional career

Lawal went undrafted at the 2009 NBA draft. For the 2009–10 season, he signed withAl Arabi Doha of theQatari Basketball League.

For the 2010–11 season, he moved to Spain and signed withCB Guadalajara of theLEB Plata. In April 2011, he moved to theLibyan League clubAl-Ahli Benghazi for the rest of the season.

In July 2011, he signed withCB Clavijo of theLEB Oro.[2]

On August 5, 2012, he signed withTezenis Verona of the ItalianLegadue Basket.[3] He led the league in rebounding (13.6 rpg) and in blocking shots (1.8 bpg) during the 2012–13 campaign.[4]

On July 29, 2013, Lawal signed a one-year deal withBC Astana of Kazakhstan.[5] With Astana, he won theKazakh League andCup in the 2013–14 season.

On July 31, 2014, Lawal signed a one-year deal with the Italian clubDinamo Sassari.[6] With the Italians, he won the season'sLeague,Cup andSupercup. InEuroleague play, Lawal averaged 9 points and 7,3 rebounds in ten games for Sassari that season.[4]

Lawal has also competed forOverseas Elite inThe Basketball Tournament. He was acenter on the 2015 team that won TBT's $1 million prize.[7]

On July 20, 2015, Lawal signed a two-year deal with the Spanish clubFC Barcelona Lassa.[8] On May 12, 2017, he parted ways with Barcelona.[9]

On August 26, 2017, Lawal signed with Italian clubSidigas Avellino.[10] His last stop in professional basketball wasHomenetmen Beirut in 2019.[11]

National team

Lawal wasNigeria's top performer at theAfroBasket 2015, averaging 19.6 efficiency, and 9.0 rebounds per game, as the West Africans clinched their first-ever continental championship in Tunisia.

Coaching career

Before moving to Beirut for his last stint as a professional basketball player in February 2019, he had served as a volunteer assistant coach atJohn Glenn High School inWestland, Michigan.[12] In 2019, he was appointed as head coach of the girls' basketball team atRenaissance High School inDetroit.[13]
