Shama orEsima is afishing community, and it is the capital ofShama district, adistrict in theWestern Region ofGhana.[2][3] The town lies about 20 km east ofSekondi-Takoradi, on the mouth of thePra River. The town is home toFort San Sebastian, in whose graveyard philosopherAnton Wilhelm Amo, the first African known to have attended a European university, is interred.[3]
The town is situated in theShama Ahanta East Metropolitan district andShama constituency of theWestern region of Ghana.[3] The people of the town are mostly engaged in fishing and its related activities such as fish processing for local markets. Shama is the sixtieth most populoussettlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 117,224 people.[1][4]
