Theshadow secretary of state for Northern Ireland is a member of theBritish Shadow Cabinet responsible for the scrutiny of thesecretary of state for Northern Ireland and their department, theNorthern Ireland Office. The post is held byAlex Burghart.

Until recently there had been a 'bi-partisan' attitude toNorthern Ireland affairs in theHouse of Commons but the role is influenced by the relationship between the mainOfficial Opposition and parties in the country. TheConservative Party, for example, generally supports theunionist cause and in 2008 re-formalised a (since ended) link with theUlster Unionist Party andrelied on the support of theDemocratic Unionist Party until the2019 United Kingdom General Election in the House of Commons, whileLabour has traditionally supportedIrish nationalism and is loosely allied to theSocial Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). TheLiberal Democrats are linked with the cross-communityAlliance Party.
