Serhiy Oleksandrovych Shaptala (Ukrainian:Сергій Олександрович Шаптала; born 5 February 1973) is a Ukrainian military officer who served asChief of the General Staff from 2021 until 2024, holding the rank ofLieutenant general.[1][2]
In 2015, he was awardedHero of Ukraine by PresidentPetro Poroshenko for his command of the128th Brigade during theBattle of Debaltseve.[3]
During the2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Shaptala said Ukrainian air defences shot down a RussianIl-76,[4] and shared video footage of a UkrainianBayraktar TB2 striking Russian targets.[5]
