Sellar region
Anatomical terminology

Sellar region is a small area in thecentral nervous system (CNS) that includes thesella turcica, cavernous sinus, suprasellar cistern, andpituitary gland.[1] The pituitary gland is located in the sella turcica, a saddle-shaped indentation in thesphenoid bone at the base of theskull.[2] The most commontumours in the sellar region areanteriorpituitary adenomas, followed by tumors from theposterior pituitary.[3]Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred imaging method for detecting sellar conditions.[4] The sellar region is surrounded by important structures: thebrainstem andbasilar artery behind theoptic nerves, optic chiasm, andcircle of Willis above, and thecarotid arteries and cavernous sinus on the sides.[5]Surgery is often the primary treatment for sellar lesions, allowing for tumor removal andpathological analysis.[6] A sellar mass can causehormone imbalances, vision problems, orheadaches. Sometimes, it is found by chance during abrain scan for another reason.[7]
