Sepharad (/ˈsɛfəræd/SEF-ər-ad[1] or/səˈfɛərəd/sə-FAIR-əd;[2][3]Hebrew:סְפָרַד,romanizedSəp̄āraḏ,Israeli pronunciation:[sfaˈʁad]; alsoSfard,Spharad,Sefarad, orSephared) is theHebrew-language name for theIberian Peninsula, consisting of both modern-time Western Europe'sSpain andPortugal, especially in reference tothe local Jews beforetheir forced expulsion from 1492 onwards. InBiblical Hebrew, the term referred to the ancient city ofSardis, whoseLydian name wasŠfard; inmodern Hebrew, the name has mostly come to refer to Spain.[4]
