Ahlbeck is a village (Ortsteil) of theHeringsdorf municipality on the island ofUsedom on theBaltic coast. It is the easternmost of the so-calledKaiserbäder ("Imperial Spas")seaside resorts on theGerman part of the island, next to the border withPoland and the city ofŚwinoujście, connected by the longestbeach promenade in Europe spanning more than 12 km (7 mi) fromBansin to Świnoujście.
First mentioned asAhlebeck (Low German for 'eel creek') in 1693, fishermen settled the side after Usedom had passed fromSweden toPrussia upon the 1720Treaty of Stockholm. In the 19th century, the settlement quickly rose to a stylish seaside resort.
Major attractions include the famous 280 m (920 ft) longSeebrücke and the oldest preservedpier in Germany. Ahlbeck has numerous scenic houses and mansions in the GermanGründerzeit style ofresort architecture. The bathing resortOstseeTherme is a popular tourist attraction; close to it, there is the architecturally noteworthyObservation Tower Ahlbeck with three observation decks and an elevator.
