Sebastian Theodore Kemble Croft (born 16 December 2001) is an English actor. He began his career as a child actor on stage before making his television debut as YoungNed Stark inGame of Thrones (2016).[1] He earned aBAFTA Children's Award nomination for his role inHorrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans (2019).[2][3] He has since starred in the Netflix seriesHeartstopper (2022–2023).
Croft's voice work includes the filmWhere Is Anne Frank (2021), "Ice", an instalment of theNetflix anthologyLove, Death & Robots (2021) and voice option one for the player character in the gameHogwarts Legacy.
Croft was born on 16 December 2001[4][citation needed] inOxford[5] to an English father and aGreek Cypriot mother.[6] Croft was named after Lord Sebastian Flyte, one of the main characters ofEvelyn Waugh's novelBrideshead Revisited.[7] He began taking acting classes at theAbingdon-on-Thames branch ofStagecoach when he was seven[8] and atMichael Xavier's MX Masterclass, of which Croft is now a patron.[9] He attended theDragon School forpreparatory school[10] andSt Edward's School, Oxford forGCSEs.[11][12] He completedA Levels in English, philosophy and film.[13]
Croft made his firstWest End stage appearance in 2010 inSam Mendes' production ofOliver! (Theatre Royal Drury Lane).[14] In 2011, he was cast asGavroche inLes Misérables (Queen's Theatre). Croft was later handpicked by producerCameron Mackintosh to return toOliver! this time playing the title role in the UK touring company for eighteen months. In 2013, Croft played Tommy in theRoyal Shakespeare Company production ofMatilda (Cambridge Theatre).[15] His final musical performance as a juvenile was in the title role of the world premiere production ofThe Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (Leicester Curve). Prominent musical theatre workshops include:I Can't Sing,The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole,Bumblescratch,[16]Danny Hero andThe Braille Legacy.[17] Prominent one night concerts and performances include:Rags: The Musical (Lyric Theatre)[18] andA Charity Concert WithEmeli Sande andLaura Wright. In June 2016 Croft appeared in the West End Live presentation ofBumblescratch inTrafalgar Square.[19]
In 2014, Croft's vocals were featured in theNational Theatre Live's production ofCoriolanus (Donmar Warehouse) withTom Hiddleston.[15] Croft workshopped the playEmil and The Detectives (National Theatre) in the title role of Emil Tischbein. In 2016, Croft was cast in the role ofPrince Arthur inSir Trevor Nunn's production ofShakespeare'sKing John (Rose Theatre)[20] for which Croft received high praise from the national press.[21]
In 2023, in his first stage appearance in eight years,[22] Croft appeared inAmy Herzog's play4000 Miles at theMinerva Theatre atChichester Festival Theatre, with DameEileen Atkins.
In 2016, Croft appeared in theITV andFox seriesHoudini and Doyle and theSky Atlantic andShowtime seriesPenny Dreadful. Croft rose to prominence portraying the role of a youngEddard Stark (portrayed bySean Bean as an adult andRobert Aramayo as a young adult) in thesixth season of theHBO seriesGame of Thrones.[1]
Croft made his feature film debut in 2017 as a Young David Logan inThe Hippopotamus. He appeared in the 2019 filmsMusic, War and Love andHorrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans as Young Robert Pulaski and Atti respectively, the latter of which earned him aBAFTA Children's Award nomination in the Young Performer category.[2]
Croft voicedPeter van Daan in the animated fantasy filmWhere Is Anne Frank, which premiered at the2021 Cannes Film Festival. He lent his voice to Volume II of theNetflix animated anthologyLove, Death & Robots in theCreative Arts Emmy Award-winning episode "Ice". Croft andTy Tennant were cast as theDead Boy Detectives Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine respectively in season 3 of theDC Universe seriesDoom Patrol.[23]
In April 2021, it was announced Croft would play Ben Hope in the 2022Netflix seriesHeartstopper, an adaptation of the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name byAlice Oseman.[24] Later that year, he was part of the cast of the horror-fantasy filmDampyr released in Italy on 28 October 2022.[25] Croft co-starred withCharithra Chandran in the young adult romantic comedyHow to Date Billy Walsh forAmazon Prime.[26]
In August 2023, it was confirmed that Croft would not be returning for the third season ofHeartstopper as Ben Hope, given his character's storyline had finished in the second season's seventh episode.[27]
In November 2023, it was announced Croft would star in the filmGet Away (originally titled Svalta) withNick Frost andAisling Bea.[28] The same month, Croft joined the cast of the upcomingBBC crime drama seriesDope Girls.[29]
Croft hasdyslexia and identifies as queer.[30][31][32] ForPride Month in 2022, Crofttweeted that he had created a t-shirt design of “two gay dinosaurs kissing, reminding everyone thatQueer has always been here.”[33] All of the money from sales of the shirt was to go toChoose Love andRainbow Railroad – two charities helpingLGBT refugees – according to Croft.[34][35]
