Sebastian Matthew Berhalter (born May 10, 2001) is an American professionalsoccer player who plays as amidfielder forMajor League Soccer clubVancouver Whitecaps FC. Born in England, he plays for theUnited States national team.
Born in London, England, Berhalter was raised inColumbus, Ohio. Between 2012 and 2013, he played youth soccer with Swedish clubHammarby IF when his father managed their senior team.[3]
He joined theColumbus Crew youth academy in 2014, climbing the ranks and making 103 appearances and scoring 11 goals. In 2019, Berhalter playedcollege soccer for theTar Heels of theUniversity of North Carolina, playing in 16 matches.[4][5]
Berhalter was announced as ahomegrown player signing by the Columbus Crew ofMajor League Soccer on January 17, 2020.[4] He made his professional debut on July 11, 2020, againstFC Cincinnati during theMLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Florida.[6] Berhalter made nine appearances for the Crew during the 2020 season, which ended in theirMLS Cup victory.[7]
On March 3, 2021, Berhalter joined Major League Soccer clubAustin FC on loan for the2021 season.[8] He made his debut for the club on April 24 against theColorado Rapids, coming on as a substitute in the 3–1 away victory.[9] Following the 2021 season, Berhalter's contract option was declined by Austin and he returned to Columbus.[10]
On February 4, 2022, Berhalter was traded toVancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for $50,000 ingeneral allocation money and an additional $50,000 should certain conditions be met.[11]
During the 2023 season, he made 37 appearances for the Whitecaps and scored two goals across all competitions.[7]
On May 22, 2025, Berhalter was called up byUnited States national team coachMauricio Pochettino for training camp in Chicago ahead of matches againstTurkey andSwitzerland.[12] He made his debut in the2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[13]
He is the son of currentChicago Fire FC and formerUnited States national team head coachGregg Berhalter[14] and formerUniversity of North Carolina Tar Heels player Rosalind "Roz" Berhalter, who won four national championships.[15]
