He wrote, directed, and edited the film.[13] Baker is one of the original creators of the sitcomGreg the Bunny (2002–2006), starringSeth Green andEugene Levy. It is based on a series of short segments which Baker directed and wrote. The series aired on theIndependent Film Channel and was in turn derived from a public-access television show calledJunktape.[14] In 2010, Baker, Spencer Chinoy, andDan Milano created a spinoff calledWarren the Ape; the series aired on MTV and was canceled after one season.[15]

The plot follows a 6-year-old girl living in a motel with her rebellious mother inGreater Orlando as they try to stay out of trouble and make ends meet. The film was praised for its performances (particularly that ofWillem Dafoe as the motel manager andBrooklynn Prince as Moonee, a six-year-old girl) as well as for Baker's direction, and was chosen by both theNational Board of Review and theAmerican Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year.[30][31] Dafoe earned Best Supporting Actor nominations at theOscars,Golden Globes andBAFTA Awards, and Prince won the Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer.[32][33][34]

I am an ally and have literally devoted my career to tell stories that remove stigma and normalize lifestyles that are under attack. I would never do anything that could possibly hurt the community.

2023–present:Anora and accolades

[edit]
Baker at theCannes Film Festival in 2024

In October 2023, his next feature filmAnora, starringMikey Madison, was officially announced after distribution rights were acquired byFilmNation.[46][47] At a press conference during the2024 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered, Baker spoke about the topic ofintimacy coordinators: "I think with intimacy coordination, it's a case-by-case basis, film by film basis. If an actor requests one, 100% [...] But I have directed approximately 10 sex scenes throughout my career, and I'm very comfortable doing so. It is our No. 1 priority to keep our actors safe, protected, comfortable and involved in the process".[48] ForAnora, Baker became the first American director to win thePalme d'Or sinceTerrence Malick in 2011.[49] In 2025, Baker won theAcademy Awards forBest Picture,Best Director,Best Screenplay, andBest Editing.[50] He matchedWalt Disney's record formost Oscars won by a single person in one night[51] and became the first person to win four Oscars for a single film.[52]

In 2025, Baker served as co-writer, producer and editor onLeft-Handed Girl directed by frequent collaboratorShih-Ching Tsou, which will premiere at the2025 Cannes Film Festival in theCritics' Week section.[53][54]

Prospective projects

[edit]

With regards to developing multiple projects at the same time, Baker has stated he "can't creatively juggle." He elaborated that after the success ofThe Florida Project, he received offers from various studios and producers. "I was actually feeling very torn because I literally could not focus on one project while trying to develop [another]." Encouraged by advice from Danish filmmakerLars von Trier, Baker left a television series that had beengreenlit and began working on his next film instead, which was then cancelled as result of theCOVID-19 pandemic.[55] The latter was described as an "ambitious" character-driven drama set against the backdrop of theopioid epidemic.[56] Baker likened the project to the 2008 biopicMilk. "It's too big of a movie. [...] I need[ed] hundreds of people to be on the street, marching and stuff, and that [couldn't] happen."[57]

In August 2018, Baker mused shooting another project back-to-back as the planned drug activist film. Little else is known other than that he expected to write it with co-collaboratorChris Bergoch, and that it would be a contemporary piece potentially set outside the U.S. He explained that while the setting might be international, the film would still serve as a commentary on American issues. Baker also revealed ambitions to someday direct anaction film, emphasizing the need for a strong script that would combine action with socio-political themes, and citedSorcerer as a model example.[58]

In August 2020, actressBella Thorne announced that Baker would be directing a documentary about her experiences opening anOnlyFans account, but he quickly denied the rumor as Thorne's suspicious behavior was blamed for restrictions affecting all sex workers on the site.[59][60][61]

As of December 2021, Baker was reportedly prepping a potential television series spinoff of his 2015 filmTangerine. He was inspired to do a TV show version ofTangerine as a way to help propel the career of trans actressMya Taylor, who would play the lead in the project. In terms offranchise films, Baker has expressed interest inFast & Furious, stating that he would jump at the chance to direct one because he'd "be able to play with cars and crashes."[62]

In July 2023, Baker stated that a career goal of his was to work witherotic film actressLaura Gemser, expressing his desire to bring her back into the limelight and cast her as the lead.[63]

At theCannes 2024 press conference forAnora, Baker stated that his next film would also involve asex worker.[48] "Just wait for the next one," he said later that year. "It's gonna piss the whole industry off."[64] On a January 2025 podcast episode, Baker revealed that he "[wants to] work" performer Sandy Kane, who had a bit part inThe Florida Project, into his next film somehow. He also acknowledged his tendency to "[lean] more intocomedy" with each new film, and that his follow-up toAnora would carry on in that tradition.[65] He planned to beginlocation scouting for the project as early as April 2025, giving no official details but teasing that "it might have aJonathan Demme feel."[66][67] Though not confirmed officially, it will likely feature a cast of Italian actors—includingVera Gemma—and be possibly shot inItaly.[68] A previous rumor had indicated that Gemma would portray an older prostitute.[69] By June however, Baker would express uncertainty in choosing a follow-up project; "I'm still exploring some ideas."[70]

Personal life

[edit]
Baker with wife Samantha Quan atTIFF 2024 inToronto for the premiere ofAnora

Baker is married toSamantha Quan, a producer on three of his films.[71] As of July 2021, they had two dogs, Bunsen and Boonee, the latter of whom played the titular character in his 2012 filmStarlet.[72][73] Boonee died in 2023.[74]

Baker said at a 2024 press conference inCannes, France, that he believessex work should be "decriminalized and not in any way regulated, because it's a sex worker's body and it's up to them to decide how they will use it in their livelihood."[48] Baker was an opiate addict in his 20s.[75]

Style and influences

[edit]

Baker has established a reputation for portraying outcasts and characters from underrepresented andmarginalized subcultures, frequentlyundocumented immigrants andsex workers, in decidedly humane and compassionate scenarios.[76][77][48] His films have stirred and encouraged a debate aboutsexual morality.[78]

Baker's influences includeKen Loach,[79]Spike Lee,Federico Fellini,Jim Jarmusch,Mike Leigh,Steven Spielberg,[80]Éric Rohmer,Lars Von Trier,John Cassavetes, andHal Ashby among others.[81] Baker has said that he consciously includesEaster egg references to other movies in his filmography.[82] For example, a billboard advertising a performance by the character named Strawberry fromRed Rocket can be seen near the end ofAnora.[83]

  1. ^Walt Disney also won four awards at a single ceremony, but those Oscars were for four different films. Baker's were for the same film. ForParasite, Bong Joon Ho also received four Oscars, but according to the Academy, one of them (Best International Feature Film) is considered a collective award for the submitting country, the director, and the film creatives as a whole.
