Scott Yuill Thomson (born 8 November 1966) is a Scottish former professionalfootball goalkeeper, who played mainly forRaith Rovers and won the1994 Scottish League Cup Final when theStark's Park club defeatedCeltic atIbrox Park. Since retiring as a player, he has worked as a goalkeeping coach.

Playing career

[edit]

Thomson started his professional career atDundee United. He made his first team debut on 2 May 1987 in a 2–1 victory atTannadice againstHibernian, but went on to play just five other first team games for the club before being loaned out toBarnsley. He signed forForfar Athletic in 1991 before joiningRaith Rovers in 1993.

During his time atStark's Park, Thomson played in over 100 first team games, winning theScottish Football League First Division andScottish League Cup. Thomson famously saved the decisivepenalty kick fromPaul McStay in the1994 Scottish League Cup Final.[2] Thomson had been sent off in the semi-final againstAirdrieonians; substituteBrian Potter saved a penalty that allowed Raith to progress to the final.[3] Thomson played a key role as Raith set up a lucrativeUEFA Cup tie againstBayern Munich.[4]

Thomson went on to have spells atHull City, then a loan spell from the English club atMotherwell, before joiningAirdrieonians in 1998. Thomson finished his career playing atDunfermline Athletic, where he played alongsideScott M. Thomson (as had briefly been the case at Raith), although part of his final season was atBrechin City on loan.[5]

Coaching

[edit]

Thomson was given his first coaching job atDunfermline Athletic while still technically registered as a player.[2] AtEast End Park Thomson forged a special bond with strikerCraig Brewster and goalkeeperDerek Stillie and later joined them both atTannadice when the striker was appointedplayer-manager ofDundee United. Thomson remained as goalkeeping coach underCraig Levein after the departure of Brewster and Stillie. Thomson was released from his contract in May 2009 after Levein stated his intention to appoint an experienced player who could also coach, rather than a specialist coach like Thomson.[6][7] Thomson was then hired byHibernian to serve as their goalkeeping coach, replacingGordon Marshall.[8] Thomson departed Hibernian in the summer of 2014 and subsequently joinedRoss County.[9]
