Sciadopitys, commonly calledkōyamakitrees, are a genus ofconifers endemic to Japan. It is the sole living genus of umbrella pines in the familySciadopityaceae. The oldest fossils ofSciadopitys are from theLate Cretaceous of Japan, and the genus was widespread inLaurasia during most of theCenozoic, especially in Europe until thePliocene.Sciadopitys has one extant member,S. verticillata.[1] The genus existed in the United States as recently as the Pliocene.[2]
