Schoepfiaceae is afamily offlowering plants recognized in theAPG III system of 2009.[1] The family was previously only recognized by few taxonomists; the plants in question usually being assigned to familyOlacaceae andSantalaceae.[2]
The genusSchoepfia is, according to molecular studies, more closely related to the familiesMisodendraceae andLoranthaceae, and to uphold the criteria ofmonophyly it must be excluded fromOlacaceae. Further investigations have also shown that the South American generaArjona andQuinchamalium (previously in the familySantalaceae) are part of this family.[3] Thus the family contains three genera.[4]Quinchamalium was thought to comprise 21 species in 2015, but this was reduced to a single widespread and morphologically variable species in that year.[5][6] Christenhuszet al. claimed there was a total of 58 known species in 2016, but for some reason counted 25 species ofQuinchamalium and eight ofArjona.[4]
