Schaalsee (German pronunciation:[ˈʃaːlˌzeː]) is a 24 km2 (9.3 sq mi)lake inGermany. It forms part of the border betweenSchleswig-Holstein (districtHerzogtum Lauenburg) andMecklenburg-Vorpommern (districtsLudwigslust-Parchim andNordwestmecklenburg). The town ofZarrentin is located on its southern shores. Other municipalities on the lake areSeedorf,Sterley,Salem,Kittlitz andKneese.
It was declared abiosphere reserve in 2000 (309 km2).
