TheSauer (German andLuxembourgish ,German pronunciation: [ˈzaʊɐ] ⓘ ,Luxembourgish: [ˈzɑʊ̯ɐ] ⓘ ) orSûre (French ,French pronunciation: [syʁ] ⓘ ) is a river inBelgium ,Luxembourg andGermany . A left tributary of theMoselle , its total length is 173 kilometres (107 mi).
Rising nearVaux-sur-Sûre in theArdennes in southeastern Belgium, the Sauer flows eastwards and becomes the border with Luxembourg nearMartelange . It forms the border between Belgium and Luxembourg for 13 kilometres (8 mi) north of Martelange. West ofEsch-sur-Sûre it flows into an artificial lake, theUpper Sûre Lake created by theEsch-sur-Sûre Dam , which gives its (French) name to the Luxembourgishcommune ofLac de la Haute-Sûre . After flowing throughEttelbruck andDiekirch , the Sauer forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany for the last 50 kilometres (31 mi) of its course, passingEchternach before emptying into theMoselle inWasserbillig . The riversWiltz ,Alzette ,White Ernz ,Black Ernz ,Our , andPrüm are tributaries.
