In 2006[7] and 2001,[8] Sonali Guha ofAITC won the Satgachhia Assembly constituency defeating her nearest rivals Kabita Kayal and Gokul Bairagi, both ofCPI(M), respectively. Jyoti Basu ofCPI(M) defeated Chittaranjan Bag ofINC in 1996,[9] Amar Bhattacharya ofINC in 1991,[10] Sardar Amjad Ali ofINC in 1987,[11] Dinabandhu Bairagi ofINC in 1982[12] and Jumman Ali Molla ofINC in 1977.[13][14] The seat did not exist prior to that.
