Sari van Veenendaal (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈsaːrivɑɱˈveːnə(n)ˌdaːl]; born 3 April 1990) is a Dutch former professionalfootballer. She was part of the Netherlands squad that wonUEFA Women's Euro 2017.

Club career

Born inNieuwegein,the Netherlands, Van Veenendaal firstly played as a professional footballer in 2007 forFC Utrecht, as an understudy toAngela Christ. In 2010, she moved toFC Twente. Whilst featuring for the Tukkers, Van Veenendaal won theEredivisie of the2010–11 season. She was also successful in picking up theBeNe League titles of2013,2014 and2015 in all.[2][3][4]

Arsenal

Van Veenendaal signed for the English clubArsenal in 2015.[5] In her first season there, Arsenal won the2015FA WSL Cup.[6] Next season, Arsenal won the2016FA Women's Cup with the club beatingChelsea 1–0 in the final.[7][8][9] Another FA WSL cup was conquered in the2017–18 season, when the club defeated Manchester City Women in the final and Van Veenendaal posted a clean sheet.[10]

Atlético Madrid

In July 2019, Van Veenendaal left Arsenal upon the expiry of her contract and joinedAtlético Madrid.[11]

PSV

In May 2020, Van Veenendaal joinedPSV on a free transfer.[12] In July 2022, Van Veenendaal announced her immediate retirement.[13]

International career

Van Veenendaal won her firstcap for thesenior national team on 7 March 2011, a 6–0 win overSwitzerland at theCyprus Cup.[14][15]

She was called up to be part of the national team for theUEFA Women's Euro 2013 and theFIFA Women's World Cup 2015.[16]

Van Veenendaal was part of the national team for theUEFA Women's Euro 2017.[17] The Netherlands won the tournament. Van Veenendaal started in all six matches in the competition, and allowed just three goals, helping them to win each of the Netherlands' matches. She was named to the Best XI of the tournament.[18] After the tournament, the whole team was honoured by thePrime MinisterMark Rutte andMinister of SportEdith Schippers and madeKnights of the Order of Orange-Nassau.[19]
