Sapheosaurus is an extinct genus of Late Jurassicsphenodont. Its skull was longer and narrower than that ofHomoeosaurus.[2] It was classified as agenus ofsapheosaur byMichael Benton in 1985.[3] It reached a length of 70 cm from snout to tail.[4]Sapheosaurus belongs to the cladeSapheosauridae, that also includes other taxa likeKallimodon. It is believed to be one of two aquatic sphenodont lineages, withPleurosauridae being the other.[5][6]
Sapheosaurus laticeps (also known asPiocormus) differed fromSapheosaurus thiollierei by its smaller size and morevertebrae.S. thiollierei had 22 back and neck vertebrae, whileS. laticeps had 26. Also, the two differ in relative limb length.S. laticeps lived inFrance andGermany.[2]
