Phrygian river-god of Greek mythology, son of Oceanus and Tethys

Sangarius (/sæŋˈɡɛriəs/;Ancient Greek:Σαγγάριος) is aPhrygianriver-god ofGreek mythology.[1]

Mythology

He is described as the son of theTitansOceanus and his sister-wifeTethys[2] and as the husband ofMetope, by whom he became the father ofHecuba.[3] In some accounts, the mother was called thenaiadEvagora.[4] Alternatively, Sangarius had a daughterEunoë who became the mother of Hecabe by KingDymas.[5] He was also the father ofNana and therefore the grandfather ofAttis.[6] ByCybele, Sangarius became the father ofNicaea, mother ofTelete byDionysus.[7] His other children wereSagaritis[8] andOcyrrhoe.[9]

TheSangarius river inPhrygia (now Sakarya in Asian Turkey) itself is said to have derived its name from one Sangas, who had offendedRhea and was punished by her by being changed into water.[10]
