When she was 20, Boler worked forBritishVogue as underwear editor under the supervision ofBeatrix Miller.[3][4]
In 1983 Boler became the editor ofBrides magazine, anotherCondé Nast publication.[5] In June 1999, theNew Statesman commented that Boler had been editor ofBrides for sixteen years, a typical example of the longevity of Condé Nast's editors.[5] She stayed at Brides into the early 21st century, supervising the magazine's expansion intoe-commerce in 2000.[6] Boler recalled that she had been one of the first people to photographNaomi Campbell, but did not use the pictures as she did not think Campbell likely to succeed, and that her failure to recognise the future supermodel's potential was a lasting regret.[3]
In 1986, Boler was consulted overSarah Ferguson'swedding dress.[7] As an authority on the subject, she has been approached for commentary on other high-profile weddings, including that ofSophie Rhys-Jones toPrince Edward, Earl of Wessex in 1999,[8][9] andLiza Minnelli's fourth marriage toDavid Gest in 2002.[10] She has also commented on wedding-related issues includingdivorce ceremonies,[11] the wedding boom of 1999,[12]vow renewals,[13] and even alternativewedding cakes.[14]
In 1994, Boler was that year's chair of theBritish Society of Magazine Editors. The following year, theFashion Museum, Bath invited her to choose the 1995Dress of the Year for their permanent collection.[15] Twenty years earlier,Anna Harvey, Boler's predecessor at Brides, had chosen aGina Fratini bridal gown andTommy Nutter bridegroom suit for the 1975 Dress of the Year.[16] Boler's choice of aCatherine Rayner gown,Emma Hope shoes, and a man's cream wool and silkdamask ensemble with embroidered waistcoat byTom Gilbey twenty years later, was only the second time that bridal wear had been chosen for the award.[15] Boler described her choices as representative of the 1995 trend for nostalgic, period-style bridal wear.[15]
