Nepalese cricketer
Sandeep Lamichhane (Nepali :सन्दीप लामिछाने ,Nepali pronunciation: [sʌndip lamit͡sʰane] ⓘ ; born 2 August 2000) is a Nepalese International cricketer, formercaptain of theNepal national cricket team .[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5]
A right-armleg spin bowler , Lamichhane has played forTwenty20 franchise sides around the world,[ 6] including theDelhi Capitals in theIndian Premier League (IPL),[ 7] theHobart Hurricanes in theBig Bash League (BBL),[ 8] and theLahore Qalandars in thePakistan Super League (PSL).[ 9] He is Nepal's highest wicket taker inODIs andTwenty20 Internationals (T20Is).[ 10] [ 11]
Lamichhane made his T20I debut against theWest Indies , where he represented aWorld XI side. He became the first cricketer to make a T20I debut representing a combined team.[ 12] Lamichhane was one of the eleven cricketers to play in Nepal's firstOne Day International (ODI) match, against theNetherlands , in August 2018. In December 2021, Lamichhane was named the captain of Nepal national cricket team byCricket Association of Nepal (CAN), replacingGyanendra Malla .[ 13]
Early and personal life [ edit ] Lamichhane moved toChitwan district and started training at Chitwan Cricket Academy, which is run by former captainRaju Khadka .[ 14] During a visit by the captain,Paras Khadka , and coach of NepalPubudu Dasanayake , Lamichhane was asked to bowl in the nets and was selected for the national under-19 training camp. It was Dasanayake who first spotted Lamichhane's talent when he was a 14 year old.[ 15]
Lamichhane is also a singer and uploads his songs and music videos on hisYouTube channel .[ 16] In July 2018, Lamichhane released his first songUdash thiyo from the albumPratikshya - The waiting .[ 17] [ 18] [ 19]
Lamichhane made hisList A cricket debut in the2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship on 16 April 2016 againstNamibia .[ 20] Prior to his List A debut, he was named inNepal's under-19 squad for the2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup .[ 21] [ 22] In their second match against the Ireland under-19 team, he took ahat-trick with his leg-break bowling.[ 23] He was adjudgedman of the match for his figures of 5/27.[ 23]
He finished the tournament as second highest wicket taker with 14 wickets at an average of 17.07 and a strike rate of 21.9.[ 24]
He was recruited by former English-born Hong Kong cricketerScott McKechnie to play for the Kowloon Cantons franchise in the inaugural edition of theHong Kong T20 Blitz on 2016.[ 25] Scott was impressed with the youngster's performance during the MCC tour of Nepal in November 2016 where Scott himself was undone by his spin twice in the same match and it prompted Scott McKechnie to scout for Lamichhane for the 2016 Hong Kong Blitz competition.[ 26] [ 27] Lamichhane ended up picking seven wickets in the three matches against the touringMarylebone Cricket Club .[ 28]
TheHong Kong T20 Blitz in fact, went onto become a breakout tournament for Lamichhane himself and it ultimately turned out to be meteoric rise for him in his young days as he was discovered for his bowling display and even went onto share dressing room with World Cup winning captainMichael Clarke during the course of the tournament.[ 29] [ 30]
In September 2016, Lamichhane received a letter from former Australian captainMichael Clarke , inviting him to play at the Sydney-basedWestern Suburbs District Cricket Club .[ 31] In the2017 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup , he took bowling figures of 5/8 which restricted Malaysia under-19s to a total of 45 and was named theman of the match .[ 32] he play for Bagmati province
T20 franchise cricket [ edit ] In January 2018, Lamichhane was included in the list of players for auction in the2018 Indian Premier League (IPL).[ 33] He was bought byDelhi Daredevils and became the first Nepalese cricketer to get a contract in the IPL.[ 34] Indian Prime ministerNarendra Modi commented that therelationship between India and Nepal had been strengthened because of the signing.[ 35] [ 36]
In March 2018, he was drafted to play for theSt Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the2018 Caribbean Premier League ,[ 37] and became the first player from Nepal to be selected in theCaribbean Premier League .[ 38]
In May 2018, Lamichhane made his senior Twenty20 debut for theDelhi Capitals in theIndian Premier League , becoming the first Nepalese cricketer to play in the IPL.[ 34] He took a wicket for 25 runs on his debut match againstRoyal Challengers Bangalore .[ 39] In the tournament, he took five wickets in three matches with abowling average of 16.40.
In June 2018, Lamichane was selected to play for the Montreal Tigers in theinaugural edition of theGlobal T20 Canada tournament.[ 40] In the tournament he took eight wickets in five matches at an average of 19.62.[ 41] In September 2018, he was named in Nangarhar's squad in thefirst edition of theAfghanistan Premier League tournament,[ 42] going on to play in one match in the tournament.
In October 2018, he was signed by theMelbourne Stars for theBig Bash League (BBL), becoming the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the BBL.[ 43] Later the same month, he was named in the squad forSylhet Sixers , following the draft for the2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League .[ 44] In November 2018, Lamichhane was named inLahore Qalandars 's squad in thefourth edition of thePakistan Super League .[ 45] [ 46] In March 2019, he was named as one of eight players to watch by theInternational Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of the2019 Indian Premier League tournament.[ 47] The following month, Lamichhane said he recognised the huge learning curve of playing in the IPL and that it had "changed his life".[ 48]
In June 2019, he was selected to play for the Toronto Nationals franchise team in the2019 Global T20 Canada tournament.[ 49] In July 2020, he was named in theJamaica Tallawahs squad for the2020 Caribbean Premier League .[ 50] [ 51] In November 2020, he was signed by theHobart Hurricanes for the2020–21 Big Bash League .[ 52] In March 2021, Lamichhane was signed byWorcestershire to play in the2021 t20 Blast in England.[ 53] However, in June 2021, he was denied a work visa for the United Kingdom and was released by Worcestershire.[ 54] He was also set to play in the inaugural edition ofThe Hundred in2021 but he missed out owing to visa issues and was subsequently replaced byTabraiz Shamsi .[ 55] In July 2022, he was signed by theDambulla Giants for thethird edition of theLanka Premier League .[ 56] [ 57]
International career [ edit ] Lamichhane withSaad Bin Zafar during the toss, 2022 In January 2018, Lamichhane was named in Nepal's squad for the2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament.[ 58] In their opening match against Namibia, he was adjudged man of the match with bowling figures of 4/18 in 8.2 overs.[ 59] He also shared a crucial final wicket partnership of 18 runs withBasanta Regmi to win the match by one wicket.[ 60] In the third match against theUnited Arab Emirates , he took 3/30 to help reduce the opponent to 114 runs.[ 61] In the fourth match against Kenya, he took his firstfive wicket haul in List A cricket, with 5/20, and was again named the man of the match.[ 62]
Lamichhane was awarded withICC World Cricket League Division Two Player of the tournament award as a result of his economical bowling and took the most wickets in the tournament, taking 17 wickets in six matches.[ 63]
In February 2018, theInternational Cricket Council (ICC) named Lamichhane as one of the ten players to watch ahead of the2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament.[ 64] Following the conclusion of the tournament, the ICC went on to name Lamichhane as the rising star of Nepal's squad.[ 65] [ 66]
In May 2018, he was added to theICC Rest of the World XI team, for theHurricane Relief T20 Challenge against theWest Indies atLord's .[ 67] He made his T20I debut in the match.[ 68]
In July 2018, he was named in Nepal's squad for their ODI seriesagainst the Netherlands .[ 69] These were Nepal's first ODI matches after gaining ODI status during the2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier .[ 70] Ahead of the matches, the ICC named him as the key player for Nepal.[ 71] He made his T20I debut for Nepal in July in the third match of the2018 MCC Tri-Nation Series , against the Netherlands.[ 72] He made his ODI debut for Nepal against theNetherlands on 1 August 2018.[ 73]
In August 2018, he was named in Nepal's squad for the2018 Asia Cup Qualifier tournament.[ 74] In October 2018, he was named in Nepal's squad in the Eastern sub-region group for the2018–19 ICC World Twenty20 Asia Qualifier tournament.[ 75] He was the leading wicket-taker during the tournament, with 24 dismissals in six matches.[ 76] [ 77]
In June 2019, he was named in Nepal's squad for theRegional Finals of the2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier tournament.[ 78] [ 79] He made hisfirst-class debut on 6 November 2019, forNepal against theMarylebone Cricket Club (MCC), during the MCC's tour of Nepal.[ 80] [ 81] On 12 February 2020, in the match against theUnited States in the2020 Nepal Tri-Nation Series , Lamichhane took his firstfive-wicket haul in an ODI match.[ 82] His career best figures of 6/16 restricted USA to joint lowest ever total in ODI history for 35.[ 83] [ 84] On 29 February 2020, in the match againstMalaysia in the Eastern Region group of the2020 Asia Cup Qualifier , Lamichhane became the first bowler for Nepal to take 100 wickets in Twenty20 cricket.[ 85] In September 2020, he was one of eighteen cricketers to be awarded with a central contract by theCricket Association of Nepal .[ 86]
On 11 October 2021, Lamichhane was named theICC Player of the Month by theInternational Cricket Council .[ 87]
In December 2021, Lamichhane was announced as the new captain of the Nepal national team by theCricket Association of Nepal (CAN) afterGyanendra Malla was sacked, along with former vice-captainDipendra Singh Airee , over disciplinary issues.[ 88] [ 89]
In April 2023, Lamichhane became the fastest bowler to complete 100One Day International wickets in terms of matches (42).[ 90]
In May 2023, he was player of the series in the2023 ACC Men's Premier Cup .[ 91]
In October 2023, he decided to rest for the Nepal Tri-nation T20I tournament hosted by Nepal, citing personal reasons, as per the secretary of CANParas Khadka .[ 92]

Second fastest bowler to take 100 wickets[ 95] In September 2022, an 18-year-old girl lodged a police complaint against Sandeep for raping her.[ 4] In January 2024, a Kathmandu court sentenced him to eight years of jail in the case.[ 4] On appealing in a higher court, he was acquitted of the rape charges in May 2024.[ 98]
