Sanana orSulabesi Island (earlier name Xulla Besi[1]) is an island south ofMangoli Island, and is part of theSula Islands Regency in theNorth Maluku province ofIndonesia. Sanana is also the name of that island's largest settlement, home to the Dutch era fort Benteng De Verwachting.[2][3]

The island is divided into six districts within theSula Islands Regency, which are set out below with their areas and the populations at the 2010 Census[4] and the2020 Census.[5] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, and the number of villages (ruraldesa and urbankelurahan) in each district.

History

As was common throughout Maluku at that time, Sanana suffered serious religio-ethnic tensions betweenMuslims andChristians during 1999.[7]

Flora and fauna

FrogCallulops kopsteini, also known as Kopstein's callulops frog, isendemic to Sanana Island.[8]
