TheSamsung Galaxy is asmartphonemanufactured bySamsung that uses theLinux-basedAndroid operating system, which was purchased and further developed byGoogle and theOpen Handset Alliance to create an open competitor to other major smartphone platforms of the time, such asSymbian,BlackBerry OS, andiPhone OS. The operating system offers a customizable graphical user interface, integration with Google services such asGmail, a notification system that shows a list of recent messages pushed from apps, andAndroid Market for downloading additional apps.

The device was announced on 27 April 2009[2] and was released on 29 June 2009 as the firstSamsung Mobile device to use theAndroid operating system introduced in theHTC Dream (marketed as the T-Mobile G1),[3] and the first in what would become the long-runningGalaxy series. It was succeeded by theSamsung Galaxy S in 2010.

Features

[edit]

The Galaxy is a smartphone, offering quad-bandGSM and announced with tri-bandHSDPA (900/1700/2100) at 7.2 Mbit/s (however, Samsung's official pages for the Danish,[4] Finnish,[5] Norwegian[6] and Swedish[7] versions only mention dual-bandUMTS 900/2100). The phone features a 3.2-inchAMOLED capacitivetouchscreen, a 5megapixel autofocus camera with power LED flash, and a digital compass. Unlike the first Android phone, theHTC Dream (known as the T-Mobile G1 in the USA), the i7500 has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack,[8] and a Directional Pad in place of a trackball.[9]

The Galaxy offers a suite of Mobile Google services, includingGoogle Search,Gmail,YouTube, Google Calendar, and Google Talk. The phone'sGPS enablesGoogle Maps features such as My Location, andGoogle Latitude. It also supportsMP3,AAC (includingiTunes Plus downloads) (only the codec, not the .aac format), andH.264 video.[10] A beta version of theSpotify music streaming service was also available for this phone via theAndroid Marketplace.

Criticism

[edit]

Due to a lack of software updates, Samsung received criticism from original Galaxy users.[11]

For some countries, Samsung updated the Galaxy's software toAndroid Donut (1.6) version. Users from other countries could download and update manually at the risk of bricking the device.[12]
